Inconvenient Value

I'm pretty sure you are familiar with Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. The message was that humans will ignore, deny or avoid what we do not have the strength to deal with effectively. Whether that strength is political will or the bother of sorting our recyclables. One is an amplified version of the other.

All humans encounter obstacles by virtue of being alive. Some are relatively easy to overcome: learning to walk, talk, tie our shoes, ride a bike, etc. These things are accomplished as a matter of course and are to most of us just part of growing up. As our physical and psychological sophistication increases, so do our abilities to master complex tasks. It's sort of inevitable and expected.

Along about high school, though, progress is no longer on auto pilot. Ideas and problems become more difficult to grasp and master. It takes focus, discipline and courage to gain proficiency in calculus, philosophy and writing. Even more so if you add sports to the mix. Convenience has no place in the life of an honor student athlete. Unless it's the convenience of having Mom do your laundry.

If attending university is next, the requirement for discipline and focus intensifies, depending on what degree is pursued and how many classes you were able to test out of. This is where the truly committed outshine the rest, earning high honors in their fields. These are the individuals who are able to set aside their likes and dislikes, their comforts and laziness in order to reach their goal. They are often labeled as geeks and misfits by their partying peers who have trouble making it to morning classes. They are the Bill Gates of the world, the ones who are the cause, not the victim of circumstance.

Successful people are influenced by the desire for pleasing results, while the overwhelming majority of people are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods.  They are inclined to be satisfied with such results as can be obtained by doing things that they like to do or simply what they find to be convenient.

People form habits and habits form futures.
If you do not deliberately form good habits you will unconsciously form bad ones.  You are the kind of person you are because you have formed the habits of being that kind of person.

Every single qualification for success is acquired through the habit of inconvenience. Therein lies its value.
The value of inconvenience is success.
